WorkSafe’s Silica Field Team visited 52 sites, issued 25 compliance notices, and seized over 65 samples of suspected engineered stone products to test for silica and resin content. Nearly 1000 banned engineered stone benchtops were also marked with non-disturbance notices to prevent their supply in Victoria.

Despite prior notice, a few businesses continued to use engineered stone, risking worker safety. WorkSafe Executive Director Sam Jenkin emphasized ongoing inspections and strict monitoring of the stone supply and manufacturing industry.

The ban on engineered stone responds to rising silicosis cases among Australian workers. Since 2018, over 680 Victorian workers have been affected, with 20 fatalities. Two duty holders were referred for investigation for illegal supply and processing post-ban.

WorkSafe Manager Ben Wright stated the team has stopped illegal products from entering Victoria and issued improvement notices for lack of hazard control statements on alternative products.

All Victorian employers must comply with the ban on engineered stone, regardless of past contracts. Violations may lead to significant fines and prosecution. Exceptions are allowed for pre-ban installed engineered stone, with strict control measures.
