Starting 1 July, Victorian employers and those responsible for certain equipment used outside workplaces must notify WorkSafe of incidents involving a wider range of machinery, including tractors, quad bikes, forklifts, excavators, and mining equipment. These changes align notification requirements under the Occupational Health and Safety Regulations and the Equipment (Public Safety) Regulations.
WorkSafe must be notified of incidents involving prescribed machinery that pose an immediate or imminent serious health and safety risk due to collapse, overturning, failure, malfunction, or damage. WorkSafe Executive Director Sam Jenkin emphasized that the updates enhance transparency and accountability, helping to identify patterns and prevent serious harm.
Last year, machinery and equipment incidents accounted for over 8,300 injury claims, nearly a third of all claims accepted by WorkSafe. Failure to notify WorkSafe immediately about a notifiable incident is an offense and may lead to prosecution.
Incidents can be reported to WorkSafe’s 24/7 emergency line at 13 23 60.
